Explain what the theme of The Pit and the Pendulum was.  Support this with quotes or events from the story.

  1. I would say that the theme is Torture.

The theme is Torture because the guy is supposed to be sentenced to death until he escapes from the rope and a french soldier saves him from the pit. Therefore he was tortured because he was expecting to die but gets out of it so basically he was still tortured.

That is why the theme is Torture.

  2. I think the theme for The pit and the pendulum is survival. I think survival is the theme because he kept thinking of different ways to possibly escape the prison, he wan’t afraid to start walking around to find a possible way out. The author wanted to survive and that’s what he did, the quick thinking he did towards the end was great, how he put the meat juice on the ropes so the rats would chew him out, I’m not going to spoil the rest of the story for you but it was a good story and thats all I’m going to leave you with.

  3. I feel that the theme of the story is survival because the man did things or used things he was terrified of so he could survive death that was in his mitts. “they climbed onto my body. I could feel them on my arms, my chest, my throat ,my face. I could feel there cold lips against mine. He is obviously scared to death. So that proves that he will do anything to survive.

  4. My theme is for the story the pit and the pendulum is suffering because it says in the story that he is trapped and buried alive but he isn't because he is in a pit hole. Another reason why suffering is my theme is because he is suffering in a dungeon when he was drugged by water and bread. Another theme that is in this short story is survival because he is in a prison cell.

  5. I would have to say the theme of the story “The pit and the Pendulum” is determination and never giving up hope.

I believe it is those two because in the story, the main character was put on death sentence and has to go through different trails/tortures and use his wits to survive. Like when he he the idea to stick a knife in the crack in the wall so he wouldn’t end up in the same place. He also had the idea to lather the ropes in the oil which attracted the rats so they can chew through the rope before he was cut open by the Pendulum. At that point alot of people would be like “This is the end, what’s the point of even resisting fate.” But this guy was like “Screw that, I ain’t dying yet”(not an actual quote.” Plus when he was put at the near edge of death by the heated walls closing in on him, he had a stroke of luck and was saved by the bell by the French when they invaded Toledo.
That’s why I think the theme of the story is Determination and Never giving up up hope.

  6. I think the theme escaping torture because he was tied up with ropes on a bed. The rats were on the ropes and they started gnawing on the ropes. When the pendulum swung back he escaped to the edge of the wall.

  7. Survival is the theme because he had to get out of there.

This guy was in a courthouse but he could not handle it right so he fainted. Then the next thing he knew he is in a dongen. Then the the rats started to bite the rope and got him free just in time. Then he got saved by the soldiers. Thats why i thought this was the theme is survival.
