Hoot - Chapter 7 - Character Analysis

Now that you have gotten to know the characters a bit, do you think they seem like they could be real people? Why or why not?

*Choose 2 characters to answer this question about
*Response should be at least 5 sentences long (but can certainly be longer)

  1. Roy could be real because a lot of kid could be out late and stuck in the rain and worried parents. Then he hides what's he does some time like everyone else. Officer D is believed abal because he is a cop that stays after the case even if he got knock off the case. Then he got move to office dutty for a mount and he doesn't like that like no one would. Then he takes his time getting home then finds Roy :).

  2. After reading up to chapter 7 I could personally say I have a pretty good understanding about most of the characters that they mentioned in the book. Mostly of Beatrice and Roy because I think they have showed a lot more of realistic situations and understandings of how they do things and how they interact with each other. Roy I would have to say is going through a pretty realistic situation with having to deal with the bullie, Dana and is curious about the shoeless kid aka Mullet Fingers. People do get concerned with how people are and what they do. Even to the point where their Curious and worried at the same time(kind of like Anxiety). It’s a natural human instinct and he is obviously showing signs of concern, so yes I would have to say Roy has a realistic personality.

Beatrice is also another character I picked over everyone else(except Roy) because unlike, Officer Delinko, she was shown way less in the story and still so far we know more about what she stands for than Officer Delinko, yes realistically wise as well. I say that because her situation is more realistic and serious than officer Delinko’s, sure officer Delinko want’s to be a Detective but that’s kind of every clique cop movie out there, the whole “I want to do more than just this” scenario. Beatrice is trying to keep the Shoeless kid a secret from everyone, even her parents. So when Roy tries to bring shoes to the kid, she takes it off his hands and says she’ll get it to him. This also makes her more comfortable with Roy and she tells Roy that the shoeless kid is her step-brother. She’s only trying to protect her brother, which is a very common and realistic situation.

These are the reasons why I picked Roy and Beatrice as the most realistic characters in this story.

  3. I think these are people who seem real because they all act like a normal human and not some alien species. For example, Officer Delinko fell asleep in his car. That is normal to do when somebody spray paints your windows black. When Beatrice acts all mean, That is because she just can’t get over the fact that Roy bumped into her while Roy was trying to run away from Dana and the fact that another boy slapped her butt. She is basically just defending herself. That is why this normal book is filled with normal characters.

  4. I think certainly officer Dolinko could be a actual person because he is not perfect. Now you are wondering what I mean by that, I mean he makes mistakes like the rest of use and he does his best to correct it. He also has ran into problems in life like falling asleep on surveillance

I think mullet fingers is not a realistic character. For one how many kids do you know live in the woods and own deadly poisonous snakes.? ……………….. Thats what I thought, and adding onto the snakes he some how has the ability to tame them and keep them as pets. So im not sure if its just me but it seems far fetched.

  5. One of the characters I think could not be a person in real life is officer Delinko because some things that he does and says just aren’t what a normal policeman would do, like him asking Roy if he could try to get his father to right a letter to the police department about what happened that night. Then him waiting outside his work for the rain to stop is unbelievable because most policeman would run to their cars to hurry up and get home. One character I think could be in real life is Roy. Roy seems pretty realistic in his situations, like on the bus when he was getting choked he defended himself by punching Dana in the face, just about everyone would do what he did in that situation. Then Roy was curious about the barefoot running boy, which now we know is Mullet Fingers, I think anyone who saw him running past the bus stop would be curious as to what he’s doing.

  6. I think Mullet fingers would be a real person because he is the barefoot running boy, and he likes to run to. Mullet Fingers got his name from people making fun of him. Another person I think would be real would be Beatrice because she is just a normal girl with red framed glasses and makes Roy get on the handlebars of his own bike. She can be mean to Roy, and at the end of the book I now know that Beatrice knows Mullet Fingers. Mullet Fingers is Beatrice’s brother. Beatrice at the end gave Roy a peanut butter cookie and was nice to him. These are real characteristics about these people.
