The Truth

In Chapter 17, Ben realizes this:

"The thing that prevents the worst from happening is the truth."

Do you believe this statement?  Write an essay that gives evidence from both the book and your life to support your stance.

  1. I dont believe that always telling the truth will always help the situation. But i do believe that everything you do has a consequence whether its a good thing or a bad thing. Like in the book deadline ben decided not to tell his girlfriend he is dying because he was afraid how he would be treated by everyone. I only tell people what i want them to know and there is really nothing they can do to get info out of me. the reason why is because i've learned the hard way why you need to keep important things to yourself.

  2. “The thing that prevents the worst from happening is the truth.” That is a quote that I believe in for the following reasons.

First of all because if you keep lying, life would get so much harder because eventually your parents will find out your lying and then that just leads you into trouble. An example was when I was in a swearing habit, I was keeping it a secret and my parents eventually found out and they were not happy and I wasn’t exactly telling the truth of what I was doing so I guess you could say I was lying but if I would told the truth to my parents earlier, I probably would have not gotten in much trouble.

Second because that is Hey-Soos quote. Hey-Soos is pretty much Jesus and Jesus is never wrong.

Lastly because Ben is keeping a big secret that he is going to die. So he is not really telling the truth since it is a pretty big secret that he is basically lying which I think is wrong. I think it is wrong because he is keeping it a secret from his girlfriend after she told him her deepest secret. Same with Rudy, He told Ben a HUGE secret that could get him arrested and Rudy could trust Ben with a secret that big, Ben should trust Rudy with his big secret. He especially should tell his parents about this because they have been with them his whole life, I think it is kind of simple to trust your family. But I would think his Mother is definitely not ready yet.

That is why I believe in the quote “The thing prevents the worst from happening is the truth.

  3. “The thing that prevents the worst from happening is the truth.”
I personally think that this phrase is true but at the same time I also don’t think that it is true. Let’s not try and act like saints here I mean come on I bet you have lied to save your butt from getting in trouble with your parents. Like hypothetically speaking let’s say I threw an exercise ball down the stairs and it hit my brother and he fell down half way up the stairs and to the bottom. Obviously if you where, let’s say you're 7 or 8 you’re gonna lie saying something like, “He hit the wall and tripped.” So you wouldn't get your Playstation 2 taken away from you.
I think the statement relates to Ben because Ben has been keeping the secret about him having less than a year to live from literally everyone(except Hey-soos.) Plus his girlfriend Dallas Suzuki said and I quote “I hate secrets” so this phrase and his secret will come back to bite Ben right in the butt. If Ben doesn't tell someone (mostly Dallas) the truth soon the worst will happen. Because trust if you don’t tell woman the truth they will cause drama so bad that it would be the start and end of world war lll.
The statement relates to my life because like everyone in the world I have lied more than once to keep me or someone else out of trouble. But sometimes if your don’t tell the truth you will get in more trouble than you are or where already in. Like that time when I was a little I broke something of my dad’s(can’t quite remember what it was) and I lied saying that I didn’t do it until my brother narked on me saying that I did do it though. Than I got stuff taken away...and broken. So that’s why I don’t really lie much to my parents any more. That and because I am there most behaved child unlike like my little brother who play’s Call Of Duty instead of actually doing his chores and getting outside and practicing his soccer skills.
So that’s why it is better for you to tell the truth most of the time than it is to lie, because it may save your butt which I’m not gonna I’ve done it it plenty of times to vouch for it. But sometimes telling the truth will save your butt way more than lying will.

  4. I believe that is true because the truth is better than lying. Lying is the worst because you can get into trouble with your parents and if you tell the truth you won’t get into trouble.

Ben says: The ball settles into my hands every time and I just don’t want to feel the way I’m going to feel when I say it. Not yet. I wish I’d have said it right, now. I wish I hadn’t been so selfish as to think I could ask for a normal year. Ex.) I hear myself screaming-I mean screaming- “No! No! NOOOOOOOOOOOO!” and I’m lying in the snowbank sobbing begging God for more time.
This statement relates to me because I lied a couple of times and told the truth. For telling the truth is better than lying because once you start lying you will get into trouble with your parents and your friends. Sometimes can get away with lying to your parents and friends but sometimes you can’t get away with it. I lied to my mom a couple of times but not always. One time I told my mom that I cleaned my room, but I didn’t do my room, I got into trouble for that. Another one would be that I didn’t clean the bathroom, I got into trouble for that too.

I disagree with this because the truth is not the best thing for Ben

I think ben will have to be the coach and not tell anyone. Ben has the trust of Ruddy and Dallas because he seems down with the flow. This will result in their trust will be broken when he dies Ruddy might think he did it and its his fault that Ben die..

For ex. when Lambeer says you can't do it but ben does it anyways and he dint get in trouble the first time. it like when i poke a hole in my water bottle then like after a week he asks the question.
Do you guys have a thing with poking a hole in the cap of he water bottle. but if you keep spilling it im going to outlaw it. Then we stop doing it for a while and he didn't say a word.

  6. I think this is a connection to me because I am like Ben because I am going through hard times like divorce and stress and depression. sometimes I don't even want to be here, but I am out of that situation because I met someone that I really trust and he is helping through it he also makes me feel like I am I good person and he makes me smile two. I think that Ben is going through hard times because he found out his girlfriend was melased by her uncle and had a baby that we thought was her brother first but it actually her son. I also think that Ben will tell Dallas that he is dieing and she will probably never forgive him if he dies. I lied once when I was dating a guy that was older than me and I keeped it a secret and I probably shouldn't have keeped it secret because secrets don't make friends.
