Deadline Ch. 18, 19 and 20

In chapters 18, 19, and 20, Ben begins telling certain people about his condition and that he's dying.  Explain who he tells and how they react.  Support your answer by using textural support with page number.

EX. The first person Ben told that he was dying was Mr. Hinske.  He reacted by not believing Ben and Mr. Hinske "fell on the ground and started laughing hysterically," (p. 206) because Ben is always joking around.  When Ben didn't smile, even after 10 minutes, Mr. Hinske finally came to realize Ben was telling the truth.

  1. In chapter 18 on pages 244 to 246 Ben tells Rudy about him dying first and Rudy seemed a bit shocked as he moves towards Ben as if he wanted to comfort him but he reeled back. At first Rudy thought Ben was saying he wasn’t going to stay forever as in he wasn’t going to keep visiting Rudy when what Ben really meant was he could guarantee he wasn’t going to live for long, in pages 246 to 250 he also tells coach he’s dying and coach was shocked and said “Are you taking treatments? What the hell? What kind of doctor-” and Ben says it’s not the doctors fault and the doctor tried to help him do it way you’re suppose to but Ben wouldn’t listen.

In chapter 19 Ben tells Dallas and she seems shocked because she’s told him secrets that no one knows about her and he didn’t tell her anything so she says “But I told you...and you still didn’t say it?” and then she ends up kicking him out “Go. Do not come back. You turn around and put down that f**king ball and get out of here.” and I got the quotes from page 254 in the book.

In chapter 20 the last person he tells is his brother Cody and Cody took it fine, on page 263 at the bottom states that Ben used to talk about dying when he was young then he says “I might have done the same thing, I get it, at least. You know what I hate?” and Ben shakes his head and Cody says “That you didn’t think you could walk straight out of the doctor’s office and tell me.” and that was on pages 263 to 264.

  2. Ben Wolf is getting closer to his death and he is making some progress. He has told four people which were Rudy McCoy, Coach Banks, Dallas Suzuki and finally, his brother Cody.

First he tells Rudy McCoy the town drunk, When Ben tells him, Rudy does not react much. He just comforts Ben while Ben tells him the whole entire story (pg.245-246). “He moves towards me, as if he wants to comfort me, then reels back” (pg.245). I thought Rudy would react more because Ben would have to be pretty close because Rudy told Ben his deepest secret just like Ben told him.

Next he tells Coach Banks, his football coach. Coach gets a little angry at first because he should have told him sooner. Although Coach said that if Ben told him when he knew it, he probably would not let him play football (pg. 249). That is how I thought coach pretty much would react.

Next he tells his girlfriend Dallas Suzuki. Now Dallas reacts WAY more dramatic than Coach Banks and Rudy combined. When tells her, she in a calm low says “Get out of here” (pg. 254). She gets angry at him because he still kept it a secret when she told him about her uncle earlier in the book. I thought Dallas would be mad but not angry enough for her to kick him out of her house because at least he told her now instead of never.

Finally he tells his brother Cody. This conversation would be the most calm one out of all the other people he has told because he does not get too angry because he was not surprised that Ben told him at that time. He says “You just decided on your own to let it ride” (pg. 263). He was still a little bit disappointed that he did not tell him right away but he was not angry at him because those two are brothers and they understand each other. That is how I thought that conversation would go.

That is how Ben told Rudy, Coach Banks, Dallas and Cody.

  3. PG.246
First off Ben tells his coach in chapter 18. Coaches reaction was kind of mad that he hadn't told him earlier but he said that he would help him out with anything he needs help with.
    “No. I’m dying”

    PG.245
He also told the character rudy. a drunk,homosexual,ex-priest running away from his past problems was confronted by Ben followed by ben telling rudy that he was dying. Chapter 18.
    “I got some shitty disease”

    PG.254
Well in chapter 19 we kind of already know what happened with Dalles but i’m going to tell you again. Ben came over to Dallas’s house on day and found he in her kitchen and said to he that he was dying because she went all rage mode like King Kong vs. Godzilla. He said get out in a really pissed off voice.
“If you could her voice you wouldn't argue with her either”

    PG.264
In chapter 20, Ben talks to his brother Cody and confronts him about him dying and oddly enough his brother was pretty calm about the whole situation and really just said that he loved him and that he was there to support him.

  4. In chapters 18 through 20 Ben starts telling certain people about his condition on how he is dying. The first two people he told before chapter 18 was Rudy and Coach, Rudy is the first one of the two to be told but he takes it as if Ben just received the news. You can tell Rudy feels upset because Ben said “He moves towards me, as if he wants to comfort me,then reels back.”(page 245) So he took it ok but you could tell he was hurting from it. Rudy also said he wasn’t going to be around much longer so I can probably assume he wasn’t as sad knowing that he probably won’t be around to experience it.

The second person he told was Coach. He told Coach that he had a “Blood disease” and told him why he didn’t get nor wanted the treatment. Coach starts jumping the gun and asks if he told his parents and Cody yet. Ben responds with “No,shitty as it probably is, you know about as much as much as anyone I know, so you’re my first-round pick.”(page 248)

So Coach was very supportive to Ben but also very upset that is dying.

The third the person he tells is Dallas Suzuki who probably takes it the hardest out of everyone. Ben goes up to her and tries to put her in a better mood before telling her, than he just says straight out that he is dying. Dallas misinterpreted the message thinking he meant dying to tell her. He then said “No I mean it. I’m dying. I’ve got this blood disease....”(page 253)

This puts Dallas in a kind of shock phase because she’s freaking out knowing that he is going to die. She starts asking why he isn’t in the hospital and when did he find out. He tells her that he didn’t want treatment. After hearing that she is absolutely angry at him and tells him to “Get out of here”

    “Dallas, come on...”

“ Go. Do not come back. You turn around and put down that freaking ball and get out of here.”(page 254)

So Dallas took it pretty hard and was very upset that he did tell her sooner(no pun intended)
The last person Ben tells is Cody, he basically asks Cody if remembers about asking about dying young. Cody doesn’t totally catch on what he’s trying to say yet so Ben tells him that he is dying. Cody tries to stay strong and tells Ben that he love and will will always support them. So Cody took it pretty well but from the way they treated for there entire life you can tell that this probably affected Cody just as much as Dallas, maybe even more.

  5. Ben told Rudy straight out that he has a blood disease. “This is it for me. This year. I think I can already feel going.” (pg.245) Rudy feels sad for Ben because Rudy moves towards me, as if he wants to comfort me, then reels back.

Ben told coach that he was dying. “Are you taking treatments? What the heck? What kind of doctor-” “He sure as heck could have kept you out of football. All he had to do was not pass you on your physical.” (pg.247)

Dallas never knew that Ben was dying. Ben told Dallas about him dying because he wanted to come out clean. “ In a low, calm voice Dallas told Ben to get out of the house because of him telling her about it.” (pg.252-254)

When Ben and Cody sat down around the lunch table, Ben told Cody about him dying. “You don’t have to keep things from your bro. Together we’re like a whole person.” “You just decided on your own to let it ride,” he says it as a statement. (pg.263)
