  1. Aunt Dorothy’s family is important because they encourage Alfred.

Aunt Dorothy is important because she provides a thanksgiving giving meal for everyone, “There was ice cream, cake, milk, coffee.” (Lipsyte 193). Uncle Wilson is important because he encourages Alfred, “People always gonna need food, Alfred.” “Can’t go wrong working in food,” said Uncle Wilson,(Lipsyte 193). Cousin Jeff is important because he talks to Alfred about boxing, (Lipsyte 192). “I suppose you wouldn’t be doing it if you didn’t like it.” “I like it all right, especially the running and the workouts. I like the guys at the gym. But sometimes in the ring, i’m not sure. Alfred wants to start his education at night because Spoon wanted him to do this and encourage him because Alfred see’s Jeff doing well.

  2. Aunt Dorothy's family is really important because they all motivate Alfred in different ways.

Aunt Dorothy doesn't really do much but she still motivates Alfred in a tiny way. She mainly just stops Uncle Wilson from yelling at Alfred and not giving him the best advice. That is how Aunt Dorothy helps Alfred.

Uncle Wilson is the serious guy who just tries to change the advice that other people give to Alfred. For example, When Alfred told cousin Jeff that Jelly Belly would work at Epsteins for free if he could eat on the job, When Jeff laughed, Wilson just interrupted ¨That's the kind of foolishness that gets you nowhere.¨ (Lipsyte 193). That is how Wilson motivates Alfred.

Cousin Jeff motivates Alfred big time because Jeff pretty much helps him by asking him questions and motivates along while doing it. For example Jeff asks Alfred, ¨When were you serious about finishing high school¨ (Lipsyte 195) he just motivates along and he is kind of telling him that he should go along with that. That is how Cousin Jeff Motivates Alfred.

  3. Aunt Dorothy's family is important in the story because they help give good Advice to Alfred like when Mr Wilson said to Alfred that “People always gonna need food, Alfred,” and that you “Can’t go wrong with food.” he basically trying to tell Alfred that his job is important even though it is doesn’t pay well or is even that good for that matter. Even though he’s kinda lying on that because when Alfred said he was boxing Uncle Wilson was ok with that, but when his son Jeff tried boxing he was livid. Jeff on the other hand actually likes how much Alfred has changed and developed from a someone who “...Seemed to just drift along.” And “...seemed so... so negative.” To someone who is actually starting to have a plan for life so far like go back and finish High School and Boxing and possibly make contacts with some big people. Alfred realizes that Jeff is a lot better than he remembered which is probably because Jeff himself is impressed by Alfred just like Alfred is impressed with Jeff. Thus the reason why Dorothy's family impacts Alfred in a big way, mainly because of Uncle Wilson and Cousin Jeff.

  4. The reason why Aunt Dorothy's family is so important is because they get to spend time with the family and have thanksgiving together as a family. Uncle Wilson is angry with his own son Jeff on thanksgiving feast. Then he said some mean things to his son Jeff at the thanksgiving table.

  6. In chapter 17 Alfred was having thanksgiving at his Aunt Dorothy’s house. They were talking about Alfred’s boxing job and Uncle Wilson said “Might be thinking about the supermarkets, more money, good benefits, chance for advancement.”. Then Aunt Dorothy was getting upset and said “Now you're shouting, Wilson.”. Soon after that Alfred said “I’ve I’m gonna continue my education.”.Then Uncle Wilson says “sometimes I’m not sure I understand this new generation.”. then Aunt Pearl budded in and said to Uncle Wilson “They got to find their own way. Same as we did.”. Jeff started talking back to Uncle Wilson about him going to africa and Wilson said to Jeff “ That boy just doesn’t understand about-” then Jeff said back to Wilson “ Maybe you don’t understand,”. I think Wilson is a good influence on Alfred because Wilson keeps bugging him to find a good job with the food market and get good pay and benefits. Jeff is a good influence because he’s encouraging Alfred to go to school and continuing what career he believes in. Aunt Dorothy is a good Influence because she believes in Alfred no matter what career Alfreds in.
