Alfred and James friendship disappeared for awhile because he went with Major, Sonny, and Hollis to steal money from the Epsteins. Alfred was getting teased by Major, Sonny, and Hollis. They were being mean and threatening Alfred. But in the middle of the contender Major and his gang boys started being nice to Alfred and was his friend for awhile. James turned on Alfred for some gangster boys and got in a lot of trouble with the cops and the police. Then Alfred went to a party that he was invited to by Major and the boys. Then James got drunk and gave some vodka to him that is a drug and alcohol. Then Alfred meet this girl a friend of Majors Arlene she seemed really nice but then she got out of and got Alfred drunk and out for the night. And at the end Alfred and James came to be very close friends even though James did some bad things.
Alfred and James have been best friends for a long time but somewhere in the middle, they did not have the best relationship because James was hanging out with Major, Sonny and Hollis (gangsters).
Before James hung out with Major, Sonny and Hollis, He was always there for Alfred like when Alfred's mom died of Pneumonia. When James was a gangster, he was arrested for robbing Epstein's grocery store while Major, Sonny and Hollis got away.
Later when Alfred saw James at a party, James wasn't treating Alfred very nice and was a drug addict like Kurt Cobain.
Once the end of the book came, Alfred cleaned James's act and James had a new life and then they became friends again.
I think Alfred will help James with his drug problem. first way Alfred will help is to stop the bleeding to a hospital and sent him to rehab around town so he can stay with Alfred and AUNt pearl. Then Alfred will try to help james train to be the next contender. Then Bud will have a another contender. Then james is going to have a killer instinct. Alfred will give him good pointers. james could make it to the big leagues. the live in a better nerhood.
I feel in the middle of the book they really didn't have a friendship but grew into a very good friendship at the end. For example when Alfred go’s to help save james from a bad cut. Doing so he says “i've lost a lot of blood. Don't worry about that i've got plenty of blood for you.”that is giving the inference that he would do anything for james. my second example of James and Alfred’s friendship would be when Alfred is helping James get to the hospital so he does not bleed out. That takes a lot strenght and heart to do somthing like that especially for what James put Alfred through. Those are my reasons why i feel that james and Alfred have a good relationship.

That is because in the beginning of the book they both trusted each other and where much different from the others like Major,Sonny and Hollis in the book. Unlike Major and them who like to act gangsta and that kind of stuff, James and Alfred did stuff like go to the movies and hanged out. That was until Alfred accidently mentioned that the epsteins kept their money in the register on sundays. This gives Major the idea to go the Epsteins and rob them blind, he tells everyone that they should do that everyone is up for it except Alfred who opposes the idea. James is suckered into going and does not listen to Alfred trying to get him to not go. Major,James and them then leave to go rob the epsteins and Alfred forgets to mention that the store has silent alarm. This mistake of his gets James caught and is put in jail for a while. That is until one day when Alfred was working at the epsteins and sees James walking past the store,Alfred goes out there and tries to talk to him but James glares at him. Alfred then gets confronted by Major and is invited to the club for a party. Alfred willingly accepts after being told James will be there. When Alfred gets there James is not there but Jamor,Sonny,Hollis and some other girls are there. Alfred asks where's James and Major told him that James would be there in a little while. Until then Alfred waits for James by dancing with a girl and accidentally getting drunk off of a orange soaked in vodka. Shortly after getting drunk, Jame shows up to the party and tells Alfred he’s not mad at him that he just doesn't think things through. Than Major takes out a bag of cocaine from his pocket and hands it to James, Alfred tries to get James to not do that but he was so drunk that he passed out before he could really say anything. Than one night when he Alfred came back from thanksgiving with aunt Dorothy's family he saw a man sitting near the apartment door who looked like garbage “Poor wino” Alfred commented. That is until he got a bad feeling and ran back to the guy and realized it was James's. He offered James warm food inside but James only wanted money for “a fix” “I only need one more...” James kept on saying. Alfred then took six dollars out of his wallet and James snatched it from him and ran to get more drugs. Alfred couldn’t find James for a while until one night he found out that James broke into the epsteins again and got away with a severe injury. Alfred thought of the one place he would go to hide from the police which was the cave they played in when they were kids. Alfred went to the caves and James was there panicking and had a wooden match lit. He told Alfred he needed just one more fix and that he could quit at anytime he wanted too. Alfred convinced James to come to the hospital because his arm was severely bleeding and that if he didn't get it fixed he would either bleed to death or it will heal up and get a really bad infection. James didn’t want to go because after he got treated he would be sent to jail again. Alfred said “Maybe so but when you get out I’ll still be here.” They then left the cave to go to the hospital. I think Alfred is going to get James to a rehabilitation center to get the help he needs than when he get’s rehabilitated Alfred will keep a close eye on him to make sure he doesn't go back to doing drugs.

These quotes mean that James was sort of being snotty to Alfred when Major, Sonny and Hollis were around, and the other one was that they were drunk and Alfred wanted James to stop being so addicted to drugs.
I think in the future that Alfred and James will get together and hang out like they used to.
