Theme (Movie and Book)

The Contender and Finding Forrester have many themes in common.  Choose ONE theme that you think fits the best for both of them.  Write a thematic essay that compares that theme in both the movie and the book. You should have 2 examples for each.

For example, if you choose friendship as a theme, you should have 2 examples from The Contender and 2 examples from Finding Forrester

  1. Friendship is shown in both the book the Contender and the movie Finding Forrester.
the contender shows that friendship is everything because Alfred only join boxing so he could help his friend James. James has gotten into drugs and so now Alfred is now trying to help his friend James. Alfred has always been helping James with his problems.
In the movie Finding Forrester friendship is developed because Forrester has never had a good friend till he meets Jamal has changed Forrester life from the person who likes to stay in his house to the person who can finally be able to come outside. Jamal was the person who took Forrester writhing and use it as his own to make a good book and story.

  2. The theme of the movie “Finding Forrester” and the book ”the Contender” would have to be Determination. Because both Alfred and Jamal are struggling in the beginning, but they don't give up trying to be successful at what they’re struggling with.

Another way that the book and the movie are similar when it comes to theme is that both Alfred and Jamal aim to be the best at what they want to do. When they are both in need of help they go to someone that can tutor them. Alfred goes to Mr. Donatelli, and Jamal goes to Forrester.

One more way that the book and movie are similar is that both Alfred and Jamal keep things a secret. Alfred didn’t want Aunt pearl knowing he was training to be a boxer, and Jamal promised Forrester that he wouldn't say anything about him to anyone. They are both determined to keep their secrets.

The book and the movie are different, but the theme is the same.

  3. The theme of the book The Contender and the movie Finding Forrester is Identity. The theme is identity because Alfred and Jamal are trying to find who they want to be in life. One example from the contender for identity Alfred is trying to find if he wants to be a boxer. This is an example because Alfred wants everybody to know that he wants to be a boxer. One example from the movie is when Jamal is trying to find his way in basketball. This is an example because Jamal wants to tell everyone that he is a good player. The second example in the book is that he is going to school for a diploma. The 2nd example is for the movie is when he is find his way in his writing . This is an example because JAmal is find his identity in his writing.

  4. I think that Determination is the best theme for the contender and for finding forrester. For example in the contender when Alfred had his first second fight he was Determined that he was going to win the fight. Another example is when Alfred went to go find games and he was determined to find and help him.

Two example of Determination for Finding forrester is when Jamal friends dared him to go up to the room and bring something back that showed he went up there and he was determined to get something. Another example is when Jamal was determined to proof that he was smarter than the professor when he turn in the paper for the writing contest.

The contender is a good book and has a lot of the same themes as finding forrester it bothe has the same setting and the same theme. what i think the theme is racing the later to become something more than what everyone expects from you. i think both Alfred and Jammal both showed it because they got smart and did what they had to do. in Alfreds case it was getting his best friend out of drugs and trying to become a contender. where in finding forrester it is about how good of a writer he is and what he can turn it into a dream.in thecontender one of the way it shows it is when he friend james runs away afteralfred gave him 6 bucks. the other one in the book it is when he just first gets into the jim and he feels the intensity of his journey. there are a few i notest when jammal returned after forrester corrected his books and kept going bake with things for him to correct. the other one is when he goes to basketball practice when the other teammate said you may think i am like you but where not.

One theme i chose for the movie and the Contender is friendship. One example from the Contender that show’s friendship is when alfred was at Spoon’s house and Spoon told Alfred that he got Alfred into night school. This shows friendship because Spoon is helping Alfred finish high school. Another example from the Contender that show’s friendship is when Alfred tried to help James out from doing more drugs but James just wanted money and ran from Alfred. This shows friendship because Alfred tried but he knew that james would spend it on drugs.

One example from the movie that show’s friendship is when Jamal brought William out of his home and went to the baseball stadium and talked about the writing. This show’s friendship because William hasn’t been outside for over 30 years and Jamal wanted to show William what a baseball stadium looked like in real life. Another example that show’s friendship is when William sent the finished book and his key’s to Jamal. This show’s friendship because when William went to Jamal’s school and read his paper and said that Jamal was a close friend that he had in years.
