The Eye of the Beholder

How does the theme IDENTITY apply to the Twilight Zone episode The Eye of the Beholder?  Use the following structure for your essay response:  TS, SD, Elab, SD, Elab, SD, Elab, Closer.

There are two ways of looking at identity: Internal (how you see yourself), and External (how others see you)

In addition to the story details, consider these characters in your essay:
Ms. Tyler
Doctor
Nurse
President
Mr. Smith (guy at the end)

    SD: The nurse was kind to the Ms.Tyler.
    Elab: She was kind because she felt bad for Ms.Tyler.
    SD: The Doctor told her how her condition was.
    Elab: He told her how it was because he would have to tell her sooner or later.
    SD: The President was giving a speech about conformity.
    Elab: He did that because he thinks everyone need to look beautiful (ugly).
    Closer: That is why i think Identity is the theme.

  2. The theme “Identity” applies to the Twilight Zone episode “Eye of the beholder.”

    One way is that if you think you’re ugly, other’s might not think so, because if others think you’re beautiful, thats all that matter’s. An example of this is when Mr. Smith is talking to Janet, he says that beauty matters in the eye of the beholder.

    Another way it applies is that if you look different than what people consider normal, that doesn’t mean you’re not, because all people are born different. An example of this is when janet and the nurse are having a conversation in the beginning of the episode, Janet says that she used to look up at the clods all the time until they became “things.”

    One other way is that people don’t have control over who they are or what they look like, because no one is perfect, and no one will ever be. An example of this is when the TV comes on in the hospital, and the president is talking about people being different. he was trying to say that people shouldn’t be different.

    “Eye of the beholder” teaches you a really important lesson, that personal beauty matters most in the eye of the beholder.

  3. TS the theme in “The Eye of The Beholder” is IDENTITY.
    SD the theme is IDENTITY through the Doctor
    Elab because, the Doctor said that its not fair even though she looks different and Ms.Tyler kept pressuring the Doctor it not do it, but he did it anyway.
    SD another point in the episode that shows IDENTITY is when the guy from the village Mr.Smith was talking to Ms.tyler
    Elab it showed IDENTITY because it showed that they weren't accepted by the way they looked.
    SD the last point in the episode where it showed IDENTITY is with the President
    Elab it showed IDENTITY because the president was judging others by their disabilities and the consequences are dire to the way they look.
    Closer in my opinion these are some examples of IDENTITY in “The Eye of The Beholder”

    Sd The first example that shows the Theme Identity is when Ms. Tyler want to be normal like the rest of them.
    Elab She went to get surgery on her face because She wanted to be normal and to not be ugly anymore.
    SD The Second example that shows the Theme Identity is when the doctor wanted to help Ms. Tyler with the surgery So she could be normal.
    Elab He wanted to help her because he wanted her to be a normal.
    SD The final example that shows the Theme Identity is when Mr. Smith is a ugly and he is their to pick up Ms. Tyler.
    Elab He wants Ms. Tyler to come with him because he want her to find her identity in the camps so she can feel go about herself.
    Closer These 3 examples that are related to the theme identity.

    ELAB: Identity is the theme because don't think the book by its face.
    SD: Another theme of the Twilight Zone is that Identity is not everything.
    ELAB: Identity is not everything because some people may not look good but in the inside they are a very good person.
    SD: The last Identity is that judgement.
    ELAB: Judgement is very important because you guys should never tell people that they are bad looking.
    CLOSER: This is why identity is shown in the Twilight Zone.

  6. TS: How the theme IDENTITY applied to the episode the eye of the Beholder.

    SD: The first point of IDENTITY is when Ms. Tyler was in the hospital with her face wrapped up.

    ELAB: Her face was wrapped up because something was wrong with her face and she looked ugly.

    SD: A second point of Identity is when the doctor took of the wrappings.

    ELAB: The doctor took off the wrappings to see if the surgery worked but it didn’t work and all of the nurse looked away and she ran out of the room.

    SD: The last point is when she meet Mr.Smith and he tells her about the camp.

    ELAB: He tells her about the camp because the camp is a place where she can find her IDENTITY and be loved by others that look like her.
