In chapter 17 new characters named Smitty and PJ are introduced PJ is a 5th grader(2 years younger than Lafayette) and is the more quiet kind of kid. Smitty is PJ’s older brother and according to everyone else he is the pretty one, meaning that PJ is the ugly one. Smitty and PJ are much richer than Tyree and them because they show off some of the nicer clothes that they wear which makes Lafayette jealous and a little bit upset. Smitty starts asking Tyree if Charlie is back in Rahway and Tyree replies with “Might want to go on upstairs and ask him about that,” Lafayette than see’s Aaron standing on the corner of the street and just stands there and look at him. Aaron then say’s to Lafayette “ You watch yourself,Lala,” and “You don’t know me, little boy.” Lafayette just turns and walks away, and goes to play basketball with Smitty and PJ.
Acutally Lafayette said "Might want to go upstairs and ask him about that." because Ty'ree was still asleep. Charlie was the one who woke up and went back to sleep.
Chapter 17 is about, Smitty and Lafayette went to the park to play basketball, Smitty heard that Charlie got caught and sent to jail. While Smitty and Lafayette were playing basketball, Aaron saw Lafayette and walked up to him and started talking. Aaron was talking to Lafayette and Aaron said what’s up with charlie. Lafayette stopped shaking with the ball in his hand and said he don’t need no colors to be bad, he got his badness inside of him.
Laf was hanging with Smiting and Pj but they had rich family then Laf was jelley of their new pair shoes and overalls. then They went to the park and Aaron is there and laf was mad/scared. Then pj came up to Laf he was not scared any more. then they play ball till it was almost dark
chapter 17 was about smitty,pj and lafayette going to play basketball at a park. in the process of playing ball lafayette ran in to aron and pretty much dissed him and his crew. He says that charlie doesn't need them in his life and really doesn't need the gang to be strong.
Smitty and PJ were in the park waiting for Lafayette. When he got there he asked him if his brother got caught by the cops last night Lafayette said that he didn’t get in trouble. Aaron was asking about Charlie he did get in trouble but he didn't get arrested gang members to a party.
Chapter 17 starts when Smitty heard that the police got Charlie and asks Lafayette if Charlie is going back to Rahway. But Lafayette knew that the police let him go so they didn't really get him. Meanwhile, Lafayette, Smitty and Pj head on over to the park only to see that Aaron was there with his buddies. Eventually, Aaron sees Lafayette and asks him how Charlie has been, Lafayette tells him he is good when he is really not and also sticks up to Aaron and tells him that you don't need to be in a gang to be bad. Meanwhile, Aaron is mad at Lafayette for sticking up to him but doesn't beat him up since he is a kid and he and his buddies walk out before anything worse happens.
In chapter 17 Lafayettes friends were sitting on his stoop and they wanted to go play basketball. Once they got to the basketball court they started playing and smitty was asking if Charlie was going back to Rahway and Lafayette said he could go ask Charlie himself. But Smitty didn’t want to so they started walking towards a hoop when they realized one of the people leaving the hoop was Aaron. Aaron saw Lafayette and stopped laughing to ask him what’s up and Lafayette said nothing then asked him the same question and he also said nothing and asked about Charlie and how he was doing. Then PJ walked up beside Lafayette and Lafayette took the ball from his hands and dribbled it to hide his shaking. Lafayette replied back and said Charlies all right, as the sound of the ball was comforting to him then said to Aaron “Say he don’t need no colors to be bad. Say he got his badness inside of him.”. Lafayette wasn’t scared anymore and Aaron got mad and stepped toward Lafayette and someone pulled him back and said he’s just a kid he dont know and then Aaron told Lafayette he better watch himself.
