Charlie Todd - Improv

http://www.ted.com/talks/lang/en/charlie_todd_the_shared_experience_of_absurdity.html

Charlie Todd causes bizarre, hilarious, and unexpected public scenes: Seventy synchronized dancers in storefront windows, "ghostbusters" running through the New York Public Library, and the annual no-pants subway ride. At TEDxBloomington he shows how his group, Improv Everywhere, uses these scenes to bring people together.

  • What is the most absurd thing you’ve chosen to be a part of?
  • What are the dangerous of group-think as it relates to choices we make?
  • Share a story about a time when you became close with strangers over a common issue.
  • Is this guy doing something that is good, or something that is distracting and useless?  Why?
  • Do you think that you could network something like what is seen in the video, so that people choose to join you?

  1. The most absurd thing I’ve ever done was at Kitsunekon me my friend Eli and a couple other random people where talking about walking to stores in the area We would just walk and act like our character that we cosplayed. Well on the 2nd day we did, we walked into subway across the street(which wasn’t very original because they have cosplayers come in all day) and we ordered a sub the way we thought our character would. I was the Hunter from Left 4 Dead so I went up to the counter and ordered a sub. Then when when I got the sub we had a couple people dressed like the survivors from Left 4 dead come in a yell “Hunter!” Which was my cue to lunge at them and they pretended to start shooting at me which I spazzed out and fell over and acted dead. There was an elderly couple in the restaurant that looked at us like we had problems or something. My friend Eli went up to the Counter as DovahKiin from Skyrim and yelled to the teenager behind the counter and I quote “Foulest witch, thou shall serve thy bidding and make me a sandwich.” The lady behind the Counter was cracking up and almost fell over laughing. Then Eli walked past the elderly people and yelled out loud “Fus Ro Dah!” Which scared the crap out of the old lady and the old man was yelling at us to knock off the Halloween crap. I I fell over laughing so hard when Eli did that. We then went down the street to the music store and walked in, right then and there they store manager just bursts out laughing because one of the guys with us was dressed as Link from Legend of Zelda and the manager said he loved that game. We walked back to the hotel and had a good laugh on what we did, I also think this a time we connected with complete strangers and has a great time.

  2. TS: I think the guy is doing something stupid.

SD: I think it is stupid because he is doing something people don’t want to see.

Elab: who wants to see people in their underwear and why would he cause people to freeze to death in their underwear.

SD: I think what’s also stupid is that he is just confusing people by telling people to dress up like a Best Buy worker.

Elab: Face it, he almost got people arrested and made the police make a new law. Who wants more rules to follow by.

SD: Lastly, I think that with the people in that business building, they were nothing but a huge distraction

Elab: People probably had places to be at that night.

Closer: I just think that all of that stuff is nothing but a waste of time.

  3. What is the most absurd thing you’ve chosen to be a part of? What I did in my story was just random I was the only one that did it but I one day in the car with my mom on the polish connection and I decided to all of a sudden since you look over at people in their cars and they look back at you I decided I should act like I'm picking my nose and eating the boogers, old people were flipping out and kids busted out laughing.
Share a story about a time when you became close with strangers over a common issue. I one day was sitting around being bored with my friend and we randomly got the idea to tie my great dane lab mix to a scooter and let him steer me, well that was fun but it hurt. I eventually crashed in my neighbor's yard and scraped skin off the whole length of my arm the second time I tied him to my bike and crashed in my driveway and slid all the way down the driveway burning all the skin off the line of my spine and thats how I met Wendy and steve.

  4. I think it is a good thing that he is doing this because it gives everyone a good laugh
I think that I could pull something off like that with my awesomeness and Bryce editing and video camera skills I think we could diffidently could pull it off. when I was in the hospital I was around a bunch of teens in trouble and we were there for the most part the same reasons. I also think that this man is doing a good thing by giving ordinary people something funny to make something other than a bleak day
