Better Off TED

http://www.ted.com/

Your task is to find a TED talk that we have not watched in class. You will then do a bit of research:

1) Find 3 articles of writing that connect with the messages being shared in the TED talk.

2)  Then, explain how each article connects by referring to specific passages in the article.  4 paragraphs total-

Paragraph #1: Summarize the TED talk
Paragraph #2: Connect 1st article to TED talk with specific passages
Paragraph #3: Connect 2nd article to TED talk with specific passages
Paragraph #4: Connect 3rd article to TED talk with specific passages

On the ted talk that I watched, Patrick Chappatte talked about the power of cartoons. I don’t mean the cartoons that you see on TV everyday, I am talking about political cartoons which are drawings that represent Politics, Religion, Internet and even everyday life. they are basically persuading people to do buy a certain product or vote for a certain politician, they can make fun of religions which cause people to start riots, he taught me about how technology and the internet have advanced so much and most political cartoons give people a laugh at the same time.

    1st Article Link: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/09/26/AR2008092602961.html

On this article that I read, Deborah Howell talked about how one political cartoon that was about the John McCain/Sarah Palin Campaign back in 2008 and offended so many people. The cartoon showed Sarah Palin being gibberish, then it shows McCain saying she has a “direct line” to god and god saying that he could not understand her. People were telling Deborah that it offended them. This relates to the TED Talk because Patrick was talking about how it offends religions as well.

    2nd Article link: http://blog.cartoonmovement.com/2013/03/the-power-of-cartoons-2-amr-okasha-from-egypt.html

This article represented an interview of a Political Cartoonist named Amr Okasha. Amr Okasha and Patrick Chappatte have almost the same opinions when Patrick said that that the cartoons grab your attention and Amr said that cartoons are very proactive.

    3rd Article Link: http://www.economist.com/news/international/21584337-political-cartoons-arab-world-are-getting-punchier-laugh-them-out-power

This article was by an Unknown author but He/She talked about how political cartoons can be offensive to people. This relates to the TED talk because Patrick Chappatte talked about how how Political cartoonists can be offensive to religion’s gods.

In conclusion, that is how the TED talk relates to these 3 articles.

  2. Andrew Solomon: Depression, the secret we share
This Ted talk explains how it feels to have depression and what its like. Andrew says how hard it is to come out about having depression and how people with depression are more realistic.
Article 1: She also talked cutting herself, saying: “You do it because you feel so bad inside. You don’t know how to take it out other than on yourself.” “I guess my darkest period was going into treatment for that first 48 hours and not having any communication with the outside world,” she said. I chose this article because it relates to my video about depression, it relates because Andrew Solomon said in his Ted talk “The only reason we don’t harm ourselves during depression is because it causes pain for other people like family or friends, and Demi Lovato went to get treatment because she didn’t want to harm others with her pain.
    http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/entertainment/2012/04/demi-lovato-opens-up-about-depression-hollywood-drug-scene/
Article 2: Every year when I push more time behind me than I see ahead, I'm reminded that Life's Too Short. This article relates to something similar that Andrew Solomon said in his video, he said “ You are only going to be 32 once. You can battle depression for a year alone but remember thats a year you’ll never get back.”

Article 3: "Happiness isn't the opposite of depression -- resilience is, according to psychologist Peter Kramer. Think of the people you most admire -- many of them didn't get where they are just by sailing through life without any negative experiences or failures. Most of them distinguished themselves by their ability to get right back up every time they fall, a truism reflected in countless inspirational quotations on the power of perseverance." “People who hide from depression and never want to remember it are the ones most struck by it and when they hide from it, it just grows. People that have dealt with the fact that they had depression are the ones w

  3. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hhk4N9A0oCA:”What makes a hero”

In the Ted Talk “What makes a hero”?” it talked about what makes hero and how hero’s like Harry Potter, Katniss(Hunger games) and Frodo(Lord of the Rings) have a lot more in common than people think they do. They are all variants of the same heroes of ancient myths.

My first connection is the with Stan Lee

Ok if you don’t know who Stan Lee is than you are probably not a fan of Marvel or watched any Marvel movie(because he make’s a lot of cameos in the Marvel movies). Stan Lee is the creator of the Marvel Comics he has literally made almost all of the characters of the Marvel Universe ranging from Spiderman,Hulk,Thor,Iron Man,etc. His definition of a hero is someone who fights for justice and treats great power with great responsibility. Which is what most of his super heros codes of honor and truth(Unless we're talking about Hulk, his code is Crush,Kill,Destroy). He also thinks that all heroes are different just as much they are the same. Like how they handle stopping the villain and foiling his plans, Hulk usually smashes his way until everything stops moving and talking, while Spider Man uses his spider sense, super strength, super speed and moreover a strategy to stop people like Doctor octopus and all those guys.

My second connection is with Kung Fu Panda.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kung_Fu_Panda
In Kung Fu Panda, the main character Po in the beginning of the story is the almost opposite of what you would call a hero, he’s weak, defenceless, and has no kind of professional training from anyone like the Kung Fu artist Shifu. But he still ended up being the Dragon warrior over the furious five who all have much more combat experience than Po. But the Turtle(Shifu’s master) still picked Po because he had something that no one in the furious five had, he had more determination and spirit to keep fighting then the furious five(plus his weight absorbed all the strikes from Tailung like a bullet to vibranium). And Po’s determination and spirit was what helped overcome the evil Kung Fu master, Tailung. My third and final

  4. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DOnDXQzihLI/Red Vs Blue episode.

connection is the Red/Blues and the Freelancers from the very popular Rooster Teeth Halo series Red vs Blue.

Know usually when people think Halo and a hero they usually refer to the main protagonist of the halo franchise, the Master Chief, though while I do agree he is the greatest and most powerful hero in the franchise I also have to give the other Spartans some credit, they have done pretty good given that they have little to no training and they still manage to overcome nearly impossible odds. Like when the Red’s and the Blues teamed up to take down Agent Main aka The Meta, who is basically the Hulk of the Freelancers who earlier in his career picked up a warthog jeep(which weigh 3.25 tons) and dropped kicked across across a docking bay with ease into a group of Orbital Drop Shock Troopers(who are the second best soldiers in the UNSC next to Spartans.) The Reds and the Blues don’t have the skills and the muscle like Meta but they do have wit’s though. They managed to outwit the Meta by taking the hook from the front of the destroyed warthog have Sarge attach it to his chest plate while the Meta had his hand around Sarges throat, then they pushed the Warthog over the cliff when the Meta was too distracted taking a 8 gauge armor piercing shot gun to the chest and choking the Sarge that he didn’t notice the through 3.25 ton warthog be pushed over the cliff who inevitably dragged him along with it. Also the time when they helped Agent Carolina fight all the Robotic Agent Texas and managed to beat them all given that they once again have little to no training. As the Sarge has said before

“Come on overwhelming odds with little to no chance of success, how could we resist!” They still are determined to push on and fight even if the stakes are high and they know that they could die in the process. The Freelancers are necessarily the bad guys they are just two different groups that fight in what they believe is right. They fought the Insurrection because the insurrectionist where terrorist who bombed civilian building and killing many people. Even though the group fights for “the people”.

These are the reasons why I think the Red, the blues ,Freelancers Kung FU panda, and Stan Lee are examples of “What makes a Hero?”

  5. Death row

Summary, well my ted talk was presented by a man named David R. Dow. He was talking about the topic death row, and how he had talked to a client of his named Will that was on death row. He had also talked about how long the death row process took. He said the reason being was the the government couldn't make up their mind whether or not he was sane enough to be killed.

Gary Alvord, a Florida inmate was on death row for 40 years because the government system was debating on whether or not he was psychotic enough to be kept on death row or be moved to a psychiatric facility for help. But sadly that decision wasn't made official before he died of natural causes at age 66.

A Mississippi women convicted of murder is getting a new trial. under the circumstances of the mistreatment of the convict in her early childhood. She is now going to been given a trial to prove her innocence over long term abuse.

He talks about him having Progeria and how it affects him. He says that he is going to the homecoming dance, and kept his head up all the time.
    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-2134367/Progeria-Dean-Andrews-20-body-160-year-old-rare-condition.html

In this article I found 5 things on how to succeed in school. The first one is space your practice - leave longer gaps between practice attempts go on to score higher. The second is to make sure you fail occasionally- invest sometime in trying things out. People who are most inconsistent when they first start have better scores later on. The third thing is practice the thing you will be tested on - practice essay writing. Merely memorizing the material is not enough. Practicing retrieving information is one of the best ways to ensure you to remember it. The fourth thing is structure information - don’t try to remember it. Reorganize your information in some way, whether by making notes of your notes, thinking about what you're reading relates to other material, or practicing writing answers. This approach is called “depth of processing,” is the way to ensure material gets lodged in your memory. The last one is rest and sleep - napping can help consolidate your memories and even make you more creative.
    www.ted.com/talks/alexa_meade‎
On ted talk, Alexa Meade talks about your body in my canvas. She first started doing this when she was inspired by shadows. She would paint the grass black. Alexa Meade was inspired by shadows, so she would take a friend and paint them from their head to toe probably. She would position them, and make them into 2d art and take a picture of them. It is so cool how she can paint someone and take a picture of them and turnout amazing. She colored her face with different colors of paint.http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-2402987/Dermatographia-sufferer-Ariana-Page-Russell-creates-body-art-using-skin-canvas.html In this article that I found, Ariana Page Russell sufferers from Dermatographia which means when she rubs or scratches herself, a red swollen imprint is left on the spot to combat stigma. Ariana uses a blunt knitting needle to write text or create abstract patterns on her stomach, arms, legs, face. The designs last up to 30 minutes before fading. This can affect teenagers and young adults. She says that skin in general is fascinating, it’s our largest organ that keeps you alive.

  8. This is going to be about the 2 important things from the ted talk video.

Video game are like a sport or hobby they are fun for you to do in your free time.
This videogame some people might not like but some one likes it in a different way. Let say if you like COD and then your best friend plays COD then he could turn around GTA a free world Experience and do anything. You could have fun with anything but the way you look at it.

The next way videogame related to life is when the hero is at a roadblock the fall of the main characters.

The hero or the bad guy but they get a pick up and they go and they do the impossible. They rob a bank or go up against the well founding military the underdog wins.

The hero has some problems after they win.
The hero is face flashbacks or friend dieing or shot and then friends taunting you with your past. The otter way you could live the good life with a lot of money sport car living the highlife.then have good life in the end.

when you get mad or sad think of the fiction characters overcoming any things. the could get shot and come back win the war.

the character is living the good life then they start drugs and go broke and lose everything thing. But there friend pull them out of it and get back on top.

  9. https://www.ted.com/talks/nancy_lublin_texting_that_saves_lives
I agree with what Nancy said about texting and driving is a very dangerous. you could lose a best friend that does a poor choice because they couldn't wait to text, thats what happens to people who are addicted to texting and driving they get hurt and they don't watch where they are going. It also depends on depression and bullying could cause this to happen. I’ve been through this situation because I had a friend named Jason and he was killed because it was a bad time to text and he ran into a back of a semi truck with his moped. I really didn't know him but he was a very and kind person I ever meet in school. The average teenager text 300,3000 text messages a year that is a lot for parents to handle. It also affects your life and who you put in danger in your life. this can also do with sexual contact like cutting, rape, bullying, and depression. It is also a really bad habit to do if you get addicted to it so don’t text and drive this is a problem lets stop it from happening. I think the best drivers out there right now are people who don’t text and drive but people who do text and drive they have a better chance of getting into a collision or a car accident. I also think thank if you are drunk and texting is a bad thing because I had a friend named Harlie that died by a drunk driver in Washington Island in Wisconsin and she was only a sophomore in high school and she left a lot of friends behind like me I still remember her as a sister to me because I wanted to commit suicide but she said that is a bad thing and she helped me through that situation.
