The Contender and Finding Forrester have many themes in common.  Choose ONE theme that you think fits the best for both of them.  Write a thematic essay that compares that theme in both the movie and the book. You should have 2 examples for each.

For example, if you choose friendship as a theme, you should have 2 examples from The Contender and 2 examples from Finding Forrester.

  1. The theme I chose for The Contender and Finding Forrester was Integrity.

The theme is Integrity in The Contender because Alfred did the right thing in the end of the book and helped James get off drug addiction by getting James to work at Epsteins and helping him get away from the police . Another example is when Donatelli made Alfred quit boxing so he wouldn’t get hurt anymore when he saw how tough boxing was for him because if he got hurt, he might end up like Willie Streeter at the Madison Square Garden when Willie got beat up badly.

The theme is Integrity in Finding Forrester because in the the same way, Jamal kept William Forester’s promise to not tell anyone about where he is once Jamal knew that the old man he had been seeing was the author that he had been studying. Another example is when William Forrester returned the favor and got the school to not kick Jamal out of school. William read to Crawford and the class what Jamal wrote but william read it since Crawford hated Jamal so much no matter jamal said would still make Jamal fail the writing.

That is why I chose Integrity to be my theme for The Contender and Finding Forrester.

  2. A common theme for Finding Forrester and The Contender is Friendship.
Friendship is in the Movie Finding Forrester because this boy Jamal was in his house when the boys told him they dared him to go into this guys house they thought he was a murderer. And then he forgot his backpack in this old persons house. Then he found out that he was a famous writer for a book and his name was William Forrester. Jamal and William had a connection with Jamal because they both loved writing stories. William showed his friendship to Jamal when he gave the keys to the apartment and also taught him how to write when he died. He also kept the stories in the house so Jamal could keep writing them. Then Jamal got accepted to a prep school called Maehler Prep School. When he got there he meet a girl named Claire when I thought they had a relationship but it was just a really good friendship. She showed her friendship when Jamal lost the shot of the basketball game but still sat next to him.
In the same way, In the Contender Alfred And Mr Donatelli had a good friendship to with being his coach for boxing and being a boxer. Mr Donatelli told Alfred you never quit to because if you do you won’t succeed in boxing. Another example of friendship is when Alfred and James has a good friendship with each other. Alfred helped James because he was addicted to drugs and then at the end Alfred and James went to a hospital because James needed help and go through rehab.

  3. A common theme for Finding Forrester and The Contender is Integrity.

In The Contender Alfred showed Integrity by not stealing from the Epsteins during the break in and telling Major he was not going to disable the alarms at the Epsteins for them to break in a second time. These are examples of integrity because because Alfred was deciding to do the right thing for him and the Epsteins. Similarly, the movie Finding Forrester Integrity was shown by Jamal keeping Forrester a secret from everyone else like he promised. Another way Integrity was shown was by Forrester going to the school and reading one of Jamals stories in front of the class and Professor Crawford to show how smart Jamal really was and that he wasn't plagiarizing, it was his own writing on the papers he turned in.

  4. A common theme for finding Forrester and the Contender is loyalty. An example is when Alfred was good friends with the Epstein’s and Major wanted him to help them bread into the Epstein’s and allred said “no”. For how jamal show loyalty is not showing that forster is still alive so he took the heat for Forrester and willing to drop out of the good school. This show us that they are both loyal.
Another way they show loyalty is when Alfred was there everyday at the gym training to be a contender. In the same Jamal is going to Forrester house to become a successful writer to get better. They're both are progressing in each subject and seeing life in a new direction going up.

  5. The Contender and Finding Forrester have a lot in common but I would have to say the theme between both of them is “Friendship” Because in the book “The Contender” the main character Alfred goes to the gym to learn how to defend himself but ends up meeting Mr Donatelli. An older man who is the owner of the gym and has trained many professional boxer’s before. Alfred meets Mr Donatelli gives tips and advice about boxing and also say's inspirational quotes to him. This eventually gets Alfred to stick up for himself against Major, Sunny and Hollis. Alfred over time becomes a decent boxer, he could be a great boxer if he had what Mr Donatelli calls ¨Killer Instinct¨ which means knocking a player out cold when you get the chance. This is what leads to them arguing about whether to continuing boxing or not. Alfred want's to continue boxing but Mr Donatelli doesn't want him too because he doesn't have killer instinct. The eventually both get what they want when Alfred requests one last match and after that he's done.
This is a similar case when Jamal the protagonist of “Finding Forrester” Breaks into William Forrester’s (which at the time he thought was a killer) Apartment. Jamal get’s caught by William while he’s searching the apartment and goes to apologize for it later. At first William was very mean to Jamal and didn’t want nothing to do with him but eventually after repetitive visits to William, Jamal and William start to develop a friendship. William gives him advice on becoming and being a author. Jamal keeps has secret and gives william the mote of confidence to leave the apartment and go outside. Their friendship was going strong until one time when Jamal accidently put one of William's title's in his speech. This get's William upset and he yells at Jamal for doing that. Jamal yells at William for not helping him in his time of need and leaves William all alone. William sit's down and thinks about what Jamal has said and done for him and eventually goes to Jamal's school to help him with the school board and the conflict in their relationship is resolved.

  6. The common theme for Finding Forrester and The Contender is overcoming obstacles.

Overcoming obstacles is displayed in The Contender when Alfreds dad left him when he was young and he never met him. This is similar to Jamal because his dad left him when he was younger and he also never met him. Also this is similar to William Forrester because he went to see his family in Scotland, but William was afraid to come out of his house because he doesn't want anybody to know about him.
For instance in The Contender of overcoming obstacles was when Alfred was boxing against Hubbard and he started punching Alfred. He tried to punch Hubbard back, and at the end it was a tie between both of them. This is overcoming obstacles for Alfred because he never gave up. This is similar to Jamal when he played basketball and Claire's dad said that if you win the game, you won't have any consequences, but if you don't win the game, you will have consequences. Jamal went back to the game and he had his last free throw. When Jamal was looking over at Professor Crawford and Jamal looked sort of pressured and he had a lot on his mind, and when he made his last shot he missed. This is a overcoming obstacles for Jamal because he tried his best at playing basketball.

  7. I think in the book the contender and likewise in the movie finder forester i feel the main theme is friendship because it had a lot to do with both stories. in the book the contender friendship takes place when alfred went to the park to tend to jameses woundes.he also tried to steer james in the right direction.
In the movie finding forrester friendship takes place when MR.Forrester went too jamals school so he could bail him out for supposedly copying off of a famous book.
