Grow Your Own Food

http://www.ted.com/talks/ron_finley_a_guerilla_gardener_in_south_central_la.html

This TED talk is devoted to the possibilities of gardening.  Since it's almost spring... let's just think about that potential for a moment.  Watch Ron Finley blend gardening and graffiti.

Answer one or more of these questions, or talk about any connection to the TED talk:

What is your experience with gardening like?  How could you see Finley's mission affecting our community?  Explore the financial sense Finely is making "growing your own food is like printing your own money."  How is that true?  Make plans to develop a garden of your own.  What are your favorite vegetables?  Where would you put gardens in our community?  Talk about the thing about sustainability.  Do you attend the farmer's market in Appleton?  How could you get gangsta' with yo shovel?  Why is this TED talk effective?  What is this guy doing that makes you want to do something?  How is he convincing?

  1. I don’t really care much for gardening, but after seeing the TED talk about that guy growing his own food, I think this could be something I could do myself. But I actually have already something like that that I have had for a long time. Even since before I was born.

i have a crabapple tree in my backyard, It’s really old. My mom would tell me when she was younger, she and my grandmother would harvest the crabapples from the tree and make jam out of them. But she doesn’t do that anymore. The tree is getting old and my mom never learned how to make the jam herself. Now whenever the tree drops crabapples from it’s branches we pick them up, put the into trash bins, and take them to where my dad works so he can dump into the field and let nature decompose them.

I’ve been wanting to try my grandmother’s crabapple jam for a long time. Along with lot’s of other produce that can be grown. This TED talk taught me that growing your own food is more healthier than buying it.

  2. I have experience with gardening like I plant new vegetables every year. The thing that i plant are Zucchini Spinach Herbs Carrots Onions Beets Apples and ETC. My favorite vegetable is Squash because it has unique flavor and contrast to it. I grow vegetable for snack or for everyday use. I love vegetables more than fast food because it is better for you and you get more vitamins and protein from fast food. If i had to put vegetable in a community it would be Appleton because it would look get for the hole state.

  3. My favorite fruits. are Watermelon, apples, mango, strawberries and best for last, GRAPES!!! This ties into the Ted talk because I have grown some of these plants and you feel the pride more when you eat them. You also know that they don't have all these disgusting pesticides on them, or that they were grown with them.

I would put the gardens, not to far into the ghetto so people will feel comfortable going there and they don't get tampered with. Along with being close enough so that places in poverty can reach it. In the Ted talk he went over that the drive throughs are taking more lives than the drive byes. And the way they do this is just feeding people all this food that is bad for their diet.

how i could get gangster with my shovel is by getting some homies and making a garden. This may be hard to convince, but after the first crop they will notice the quality of the fruit is better along with the taste. And they may recruit some more of there Homie G’s.

  4. For most of my life I have helped out growing gardens every year and every year it taste better than the store bought. It was also something to do in the summer when there was nothing. As the Ted video said its like printing your own money and it really is because in today its harder to pay for healthy foods than unhealthy. It a shame that in south central they have all that land and they would let people put it to good uses. I thought our government wanted to help us. I think the government should be asking those people to grow there and make use of the lot, instead of it just sitting there. It kinda make me mad that they would rather watch their town slowly die. it could also be a way to keep kids out of crime and gangs.

  5. If I choose where to put a garden in the community I would put it where it’s very populated Like a park where there is people all the time. One thing that I think that guys is doing is helping his community because nobody else will and when they tried to stop him he just kept plating and that made other people felt like they too had do something so they started to help him. I think that this ted talk is effective to other people in other community that are doing poorly and by watching Ted talk this guy probably gave them inspiring ideas to help their community. I think that growing food is like printing money because there ain't much food there and growing this money.

  6. My favorites vegetables are tomatoes, broccoli, and onions. they are the best because if you have the good ingredients all of this will taste very good. Tomatoes I love this because if you put it with eggs and onion you can make a very good egg lunch. Tomatoes can also go with meat.

The broccoli is cool because of all the energy you get from it people might say that its is very bad for you but its not. Broccoli is good with meat, onions, and tomatoes because if you have the right food and cooking skills you can make stuff taste bad to stuff that taste so good it makes people want more of it.

The onions are awesome because it can make grown man cry. Onions are very good with hamburgers and salads sandwiches as well. people don't like onions is only because people can stain the pain in the eyes with the good old onions. If you put all of these together it can make a good breakfast or lunch.
