Reading Conference #1

  1. Write one full paragraph Think back to when you were just starting this book. You probably had some expectations, some predictions for what would happen. How accurate have those predictions been? What has surprised you?
  2. Write one full paragraph What do you think about as you read (specifically with this book). Is it a challenge for you to understand what is happening? Are you making predictions in your head? Do you visualize the characters? Do you read different characters in different voices? Do you race to get to the end of the page/chapter/book? Have you ever lost track of time while reading?
  3. Write one full paragraph and include a link Find a news story where a real person has a conflict similar to the person in your book. If you are reading something sci-fi, fantasy, or otherwise, consider the core of the internal conflict of your protagonist... what is s/he feeling/going through? Provide a link to the story and explain how your character is similar or dissimilar to the people in the news story. Be prepared to discuss the similarities and differences.

  1. I thought at first the book was going to be some sort of mystery novel with a dark secret revealed in the book. I was half right. It does have a dark secret going on in the book, but it’s not really a mystery novel. I was also thinking that the situation they are in didn’t actually have a cause. The book surprised me when it said that people keep disappearing without any trace or evidence of their existence whatsoever.
When I read this book I try to imagine what’s going on when I read so I have a better understanding of what is happening. The book is easy to understand once you read the first few chapters. I try to make predictions in my head of what will happen next, I also try to say different people’s dialogue in my head with different voices. When I read the book I get so into it that I lose track of time, I want to know what happens next but I try not to rush through each chapter so I can know what’s going on in the book.
The protagonist in the book is Neva, she is trapped inside a big dome the book calls the protectosphere and she wants out. The book says they live inside it because the outside of it is a giant wasteland with deadly toxins in the air. The article which I found has a similar problem. In the article, children in North Carolina are suffering from poverty. The book and article are similar because people are trapped in a situation that they can’t get out of. But they are also different because North Carolina isn’t trapped in a giant dome, and Neva isn’t suffering from poverty.

  2. I. When I stared the book Chains I thought it was about a person buying and selling slaves. I thought that a white man in the 1776 was going to buy 2-3 slaves. I was not accurate on my prodiction because it was about 2 slave girls who were going to find freedom. The girl wanted to be freed by the slave owners will after she dies but the husband of the owner won’t let her and then he goes and sells them.

II. When I am reading I am not thinking about what is going to happen next. It is not hard to read this book and it is really easy. I am not making predictions in my head then I won’t get in to the book. Sometimes I visualize my characters so I can see what they would look like back then in 1776. I do read different characters in my book for example I read the slaves owners voice and Isabel’s voice. I don’t race I take my time with the book. Sometimes I have lost track of time while reading my book.

III. My protagonist is Isabel and her internal conflict is about her mother dying of some diseases. Also, that her father died from a club when he was being sold and she watches him getting beat to death. She has grief because she doesn’t want her only sister to die. In the article http://www.tpronline.org/article.cfm/Teens___Grief that I found teens with grief for dead parents. The article and the book are about parents dying. The differences of the article and the book, the book is in the 1776 and the article is in the early 2000. Also I think that I know what is going in Isabel’s life.

  3. How my book is related to a kid napping in new your
I thot it was going to be about love. Becuas he starts off talking about it and that the book woulkd have time traval in it which it did not and it would be a fast read but it is cind of long. The only predicson that came true was the love one.
I like this book so fare because it is easy to understand. It has a good plot. And the charicters are good. How thay are dead and traped in the conputer. When i read thewit is easy to ceep makeing prodichens.
The kid napin in both the book and the kid napping is there bothe held hosteg for about a year. And they are fors to do thing like be soled and do work. Thay are both helled capptiv by a man and a woman. No butty no that they are held captive in the book and in new York the nabers never thot that ether becuas he was making her say thing. Thay both don’t know where thay where and where to go.

  4. 1 When I started to read Twisted. I made a prediction that it would be about a teenager in high school talking about his life and the things he has to go through in his life. My prediction was right he talks about all the things he has to deal with in his life. I think the book did not surprise so far there is still more that I have to read. I think I will be making a lot more prediction about the book.
2 When I read this book I don’t really think that this book is much of a challenge. It is easy to understand what the character has to deal with in the book. Like his dad thinking that he is a bad son and that the girl that he likes is the sisters of the kid that all ways pick on him in school. Every time I read this book it feels like that I only been in class for one hour. I also been thinking and making prediction about what would happen.
3 The protagonist in my book is Tyler and the internal conflict that he is dealing with is community service similar to the mother who had to do 5o hours of community service. Tyler did a prank that went wrong and he ended up doing community service. The mother had to do community service because of her four year old daughter using chalk to draw on rocks on Belle Isle in Richmond.

  5. In the book INCARCERON it makes me wonder consistently what the time period is. I wonder because they have stoplights when they also use horses. When I originally picked out this book I thought it was way back and I thought it would be about some fantasy story due to the fancy/funny looking key on the cover.
So far in the book it is pretty misleading. I say this because at one time it says there is a wedding. She then runs away for no reason that is stated or that leads up to that happening. Except the only reason that would make sense is that her parents are not there. So in return it did not feel right and she called it off.
In this book the article http://www.tnr.com/article/environment-energy/89377/poverty-escape-psychology-self-control I found out that they are struggling with poverty. I can relate the book and the article because they both interact with the sense of urgency to do or get something. And in this case it was he wanted to get out of jail so he can be free. And not have the sense that he was in poverty. The people in the article have the sense of poverty because they are somewhere they can’t get out.

  6. When I first picked out “kill you last” book, I thought it would be cool to read. I picked it out and read the inside cover to see what it is about and said “oh, sounds like a good book”. When I got to the classroom and opened the book and started to read the first sentences, I predicted that the characters and the book would be interesting. After reading the first chapter my prediction was right. Then reading the next two chapters my prediction was fading off, because the book was getting really boring and slow.
I think it’s not challenging to read because I get the book. While I’m reading the book, I make a lot of predictions while reading.
The protagonist is Shelby and her conflict is she’s thinking that her dad is a kidnapper. Shelby’s conflict is being caused by her dad because she thinks her dad has something to do with the two missing girls. In the article there was a missing boy and being investigated by police as well as the book I’m reading. The article I read says that a boy was missing and was being investigated by police and detectives along with my book that in my book there is these two girls are trying to be found and being investigated.

  7. I thought this book was going to be about a person that hunts killer. So far that prediction is coming true. So the title of the book tells most of the book. The words above the title give a little too much I thought, but that let me knew it was going to be the book for me.
I think this is a really good book. It’s everything so far as I expected. I know everything that is happening in my book, so it’s not that hard of a book. I’m not really predicting what is going to happen yet. I don’t read different character in different voices. I take my time when I read, so I don’t miss anything. I sometime lose track of time when it a really good part of the book.
The protagonist jazz has a lonely life with his grandma. The only real conflict I see is he doesn’t want to become like his dad. He thinks everyone is afraid of him, because of what his dad has done. His dad has kill in the hundreds and everyone thinks jazz is going to do the same. Jazz said his dad said some serial killers want to get caught and in the article it said kind of the same thing in fewer words.
