Four of Hearts - Figurative Language

Identify 3 lines in Ch. "Four of Hearts" (p.287-296) that contain figurative language (simile, metaphor, personification, etc.).  Write down the lines, and explain what the author is trying to say.

Ex.  METAPHOR "...which nearly makes me throw my temper from my skin and hurl it at her."  (281)
 - The author is using Ed's temper as a metaphor for his pent-up anger to describe how he wants to snap on his Ma.

  1. “If my stomach was a color, I think, it would be black, like tonight” :SIMILE {ZUSAK 296} The author is saying that his stomach is like where Keith and Daryl gave the final blow with the true.

    The words loom nearer still and crawl into my ear. :PERSONIFICATION {ZUSAK 295} The author is trying to say that words can't really crawl into an ear.

    A strong feeling reaches out in front of me and drags with it a knowledge that I have to go in order. :PERSONIFICATION {ZUSAK 290} The author trying to get at is that the feeling that he has is dragging him in closer.

    the author is trying to say that her voice is sweet. Pg. 271

    i can hear the hearts screaming and beating in my ears (personification)
    the author is saying that his heart is pounding and he can't stop thinking about the hearts. Pg.270

    the Doorman looks nervous enough to cry. (personification)
    the author is trying to say that the dog was either scared or unhappy. Pg.274

  3. “Fear is the street. Fear is every step.” (Zusak 290) the author is trying to say that Ed is trying to decide who to go to first. This is a metaphor.

    “A strong feeling reaches out in front of me and drags with it a knowledge that I have to go in order.” (Zusak 290) the author is trying to say the Ed is going to send each message in order. This is personification.

    “I feel the fear, but I walk fast towards it.” (Zusak 289) the author is trying to say that Ed is nervous about his last messages as he walk’s to deliver them. This is personification.

  4. 1. (The darkness grows heavier on the the road and I began to run). The author is using his fear of him having to do something bad to his friends.(Zusak 220).

    2. ( All I’m able to do is sit there and collect the shredded pieces of everything I just saw.) The author is telling us that Ed is trying to figure out all the things he’s supposed to be seeing.(Zusak 296).

    3. ( Fear is the street.Fear is every step). The author is say that Ed Doesn't know what to do first.(Zusak 290).

    The author is using metaphor to the let the reader know he is feeling deep sorrow.

    I feel the fear, but i walk faster toward it. 289
    The author uses personification/metaphor to let the read know Ed scared what is going to happen, but he has to do it.

    Now, with the tree above me, i attempt to deny it and stand up, but my stomach drops and sit down again. 296
    The author uses metaphor to describe Eds fear of heights.
